Cougars Add Three for 2009
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team has added Cale Wine (Coulterville), Josh Hoguet (Fairview Heights) and Michael Hurt (Springfield) to its roster for the upcoming 2009 season.
The trio come to SIUE at an exciting time in its history. Next season will mark SIUE's first season as a NCAA Division I athletic program. The 2009 season begins with the USC Upstate Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C.. The tournament begins Feb. 20 and runs through Feb. 22.
For his final high school season, Wine led the Marissa High Meteors to the state tournament and a second-place finish. This was the first time the Marissa program had been to state since 1986.
During the regular season Wine posted a 12-0 record. In his 70 innings pitched, he finished with 102 strikeouts, 18 walks, and 27 hits. He also posted a earned run average of 0.30.
"Cale is a great addition to our pitching staff. He is a fearless competitor. His best asset is his ability to command his fastball," said associate head coach Tony Stoecklin.
Hoguet also enters SIUE as a true freshman having been named All-Southwestern Conference his final two seasons at Belleville East High School. Hoguet looks to make his mark at SIUE not only as a pitcher but also as a position player. Stoecklin said the right-hander starts out with some strong skills.
"He has a live arm throwing 86 and 87 (miles per hour). And his out pitch is a curve ball that is pretty good," said Stoecklin.
While playing for Springfield (Ill.) College, Hurt proved to be a consistent player, starting 94 of the 98 games he appeared in during his two years.
The Bulldogs compiled a 39-11 record for the 2008 season, thanks in part to Hurt. He recorded a .359 batting average, 39 runs, and 41 runs batted in this past season.
"Mike adds some much needed depth and experience to the middle of the infield. He is an outstanding shortstop who has great hands and range," said Stoecklin.
