McCarty Wins Murray State Invitational
MURRAY, Ky. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's golfer Neal McCarty won the Murray State Invitational Tuesday and set a school record in the process.
McCarty shot a six-under-par 65 to tie the school record set by Les Agne in 1980. McCarty easily won the tournament with a 12-under-par 201.
With windy conditions on Tuesday, McCarty was hardly bothered. He shot the low round of the day but missed the tournament 54-hole record by four strokes. McCarty led the field of 82 players with 19 birdies during the 54-hole event at Miller Memorial Golf Club. His 31 on the front nine also was a tournament best.
SIUE shot its best round of the season with a team total of 281 and placed fifth overall with an 858. Host Murray State won the two-day event with an 835 followed by Central Arkansas (845), Morehead State (855), and Western Illinois (856). SIUE bested Tennessee Tech (868), Tennessee-Martin (873), Lewis (880), Tennessee-Martin B team (885), Lipscomb (885), Eastern Illinois (889), Union (895), Bradley (900) and Kentucky Wesleyan (928).
