EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s and women’s track and field teams will be very busy the weekend of the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Cougars learned Tuesday it has qualified three male individuals, six female individuals and a female relay team for the Championships to be held March 10-11 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
On the men’s side, Anthony Weber (Marengo) made the field of 13 pole vaulters. Kyle Rose (Kankakee) is among the 14 individuals in the 400-meter dash. Cody Ellermeyer (DuQuoin) is in the field of 13 runners in the 800-meter run.
The SIUE women’s team has three student-athletes competing in two events.
Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year Deserea Brown (Flossmoor) will compete as an individual in the 400-meter dash after posting the seventh fastest time in the nation among qualifiers. Brown also will run the final leg of the 1,600-meter relay, which includes Kimetha Williams (Bellevue, Neb.), Valerie Simmons (St. Louis/Normandy H.S.), and Angel Royston (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood East).
Christine Butler (Matteson), a double winner at the GLVC Championships in the long jump and the triple jump, will compete in those same events at the national meet. Butler earned All-American status last season in both the indoor and outdoor triple jump.
Lindsey DeFevers (Virden) will compete in both the shot put and the weight throw. DeFevers set a new school record in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 2.5 inches at the GLVC Championships.
Holly Noller (Pawnee) earned an invitation to join DeFevers in the shot put. Her throw of 46-10 places her two spots behind DeFevers on the national qualifier list at ninth.
Callie Glover (Bartlett) set the new school record and tossed the sixth best throw in the nation in the weight throw. Her qualifying throw was 57-5.75.
Sprinter Tairisha Sawyer (Chicago) hopes to best her seventh place All-American finish last indoor season at 200 meters. Sawyer will be part of a field of 17 sprinters running 200 meters.
