Four Sign On to Join SIUE Women’s Basketball
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – First-year head coach Amanda Levens has added four players to her roster for the 2008-2009 basketball team at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Levens takes on the challenge of NCAA Division I play with newcomers Madison Meade (Auburn, Calif.), Marquia Taylor (Springfield), Kate Affourtit (Lake Forest), and Ashley Bey (Chicago).
“We’re very excited about this group of players,” said Levens.
Meade, a 5-foot-6-inch point guard, averaged 10 points, four steals and four assists last season for Placer High School in the Pioneer Valley League. She was a three-time All-League player was well as a two-time Defensive Player of the Year.
“I think she’s heady and a competitor. She plays her best against the best competition,” said Levens.
Taylor is a transfer from Lincoln Land Community College and played her prep basketball at Springfield Lanphier High School. At Lanphier, she is ranked among the top five all-time in three-pointers (97) and scoring (1,466 points).
Taylor, who comes to SIUE with junior eligibility, was a Class AA All-State selection her senior season.
“She’s a good athlete and is a good scorer. She gives us some depth at the wing position,” said Levens.
Affourtit joins SIUE as a freshman after starting the last four seasons at Lake Forest High School, where she averaged 7.8 points, 5.8 assists and 2.9 steals per game. She was a two-time All-Area pick and an All-Conference selection her senior year.
She played seven seasons of AAU basketball for Full Package.
“Kate comes from a strong AAU program. I think she’s a good passer and ball-handler who we are anxious to see play at this level,” Levens said.
Bey is a transfer from Midland (Texas) College. She was an honorable mention All-Western Junior College Athletic Conference player last season. Bey helped Chicago (Young) High School to a third-place finish as a senior.
“Ashley comes from a pair of winning programs. She understands what it takes to be successful at the college level. She is explosive and is a good on-ball defender,” Levens said.
