SEMO Edges Cougars 1-0
FENTON, Mo. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s soccer held its own for 90 minutes with Division I Southeast Missouri State but fell 1-0 on Thursday.
SIUE and SEMO played a neutral site game on the artificial surface at St. Louis Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo. The two teams dueled all night on the carpet, but it was a goal off an SIUE foul that proved to be the game winner.
Megan Hejlek scored at 22:08 unassisted from 20 yards out past SIUE goalkeeper Jessica Brown.
The Cougars were outshot by the Otahkians 12-8. Christen Carducci had two shots to lead all Cougars. Christina Stremlau and Angela Light provided the only on-goal shots as SEMo goalie Carina Souza collected both attempts in the shutout.
SEMO improved to 10-5-2. SIUE is now 13-5 overall and next plays Nov. 5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in Kenosha, Wis. The Cougars will face the winner of No. 3-seeded Northern Kentucky and sixth-seeded Missouri-St. Louis, which will be played Sunday in Highland Hts., Ky.
