SIUE Freshmen Lead Cougars over Lions
         FENTON, Mo. -- Three freshmen scored in their first collegiate game Friday night as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville downed Missouri Southern State 3-0 in the season opener for both teams.
         Elizabeth Valenti (Overland Park, Kan.), Amy Million (Granite City), and Jenny Kates (Florissant, Mo.) all scored in SIUE's triumph. The game was played on the artifical turf at St. Louis Soccer Park late Friday evening after heavy rains appeared earlier in the day.
         SIUE took control from the first minute, outshooting the Lions 17-5.
         Kim Roady (Granite City) and Kaci Backs (Greenville) combined for the shutout.
         SIUE hopes to return to Korte Stadium for its true home opener on Sunday when it entertains Ashland at noon. Ashland opened the season with a 2-1 victory at Missouri-St. Louis.
