SIUE Women's Soccer Signs Three Freshmen for 2006
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer coach Lynda Bowers reloaded for the 2006 season with a trio of players who have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Cougars.
Jessica Brentana (St. Peters, Mo.), Kelley Humphrey (Edwardsville), and Correen Roark (Florissant, Mo.) will join the Cougar women's soccer team next season.
Brentana was a two-time All-Conference selection at Fort Zumwalt South High School, where she scored 15 goals and added seven assists last season. Brentana was a two-time Gateway Athletic Conference South All-Conference performer.
"She has good speed and great athletic ability," said SIUE Coach Lynda Bowers. "The best word I can use to describe her is 'tenacious'."
Humphrey, a defender, scored one goal and added four assists for the Tigers last season. The team's defensive Most Valuable Player, Humphrey was named All-Area by the Belleville News-Democrat and second team All-Southwestern Conference.
"She has great technique and sees the field well," said Bowers. "She'll be playing behind some experienced seniors in the backfield, so I hope she will learn from our veterans and eventually take things over."
Roark posted 27 goals and 20 assists in her final season at Hazelwood West High School. The center midfielder was Suburban North Conference Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection. She was named first team All-State and honorable mention All-Metro.
"She'll be a good addition in the midfield," said Bowers. "She should turn into a great ball-winner and also add another dimension to our attack because of her speed, size, and work rate."
The SIUE women's soccer team finished the 2005 season with its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998 under Bowers' direction. The Cougars won a school-record 17 games, finishing in second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with an 11-2 mark.
