Akron Blanks Cougars 2-0
AKRON, Ohio - Akron scored twice in the second half and rallied past Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in women's college soccer Friday night.
SIUE, now 1-1, was outshot by the Zips 18-4.
SIUE Coach Derek Burton said that despite the shot difference the Cougars played well.
"It just wasn't our best performance, but the effort was there," he said. "We played hard, but we have to play smart and hard."
The Cougars and the Zips were tied 0-0 until the 58th minute when Akron's Rachel Phillip scored unassisted. Leigh Cullen added an insurance goal for the Zips at 80:32, shooting to the right side of the net from the top of the 18-yard box.
Burton said he was pleased with the play of goalkeeper Kaci Backs, who collected six saves.
"Kaci Backs was unbelievable in goal. She did a fantastic job," Burton said.
SIUE returns to action Sunday at Kent State. The Cougars and the Golden Flashes are set for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
