Cougars Fall in OT
KENT, Ohio - With a long throw-in toward the goal and a quick tap an overloaded goalie box, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer team took a 2-1 overtime loss at Kent State.
"It was a heartbreaking way to lose," said SIUE Coach Derek Burton.
The Cougars, 1-2, had control early when Jenny Kates scored from the top of the box on a pass from Jennifer Kratzer at 19:19 of the first half.
Burton said despite the lead he didn't feel the team played with a sense of urgency in the first half.
"For me, it is all part of the learning process. We just didn't play with the sense of urgency we needed. In the second half, it picked up. Hopefully, we can use this game as a stepping stone to know we have to play hard for a full game," he said.
Kent State, 2-1, tied the game up at 25:11 when Caitlin Hester scored from 35 yards out.
SIUE's Kaci Backs played the first half in goal, and Claire Lovercheck took over in the second half and overtime. Both players made three saves.
Burton said the Golden Flashes possessed an offensive weapon in Hester, who was able to throw balls from the sidelines into dangerous spots in the box, creating tough defensive problems. That weapon was minimized until 5:20 into the overtime when Hester threw the ball in the box and teammate Catherine Marosszeky teamed up to score the winning goal.
SIUE returns to action Friday in Murray, Ky., to take on UT Martin on Friday and Murray State on Sunday.
