August 31, 2008 SIUE Women's Soccer Travels to Racer Classic EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer team continues the regular season traveling to Murray, Ky. The Cougars will be participating in the Racer Classic, playing UT Martin and host Murray State. SIUE, with a 1-2 record overall, looks to rebound after a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Kent State this past Sunday. Jenny Kates (Florissant, Mo.) scored the team's only goal against Kent State. Sophomore Kiara Akpore continues to lead the team in scoring with two goals. The Cougars are taking on a future Ohio Valley Conference opponent UT-Martin Friday at 2 p.m. The Skyhawks come in to the contest with a 2-1 record. "UT Martin plays with a tough mentality," said SIUE Coach Derek Burton. SIUE has played with intensity during parts of each of the first three games, according to Burton. "We need to play with more of an edge on the field," he said. "As a team I want us to play a full 90 minutes at a high level." Burton said. On Sunday, the Cougars will take on Murray State, also a future OVC opponent, at 2:30 p.m. The Racers were picked to finish second in the OVC preseason poll. "Murray State has a quality group of players," Burton added. The Cougars are working are working on their own game rather than directing attention at opponents. "Our team is finding out where each player fits in our attack." Burton said. "The team is looking for players to take leadership roles and make us better." -siue cougars- |
