Cougars Drop 4-1 Decision
MURRAY, Ky. - UT Martin scored three unanswered goals Friday and defeated Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 4-1 in women's college soccer action at the Racer Classic.
SIUE, 1-3, will play Murray State in the final game of the tournament Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
SIUE Coach Derek Burton said that despite the score the Cougars had more possessions in the game but is still looking for consistency from his squad.
"All four goals they scored were because of a lack of awareness," said Burton.
UT Martin jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Kelly Ann Hutchison scored unassisted from 20 yards out past SIUE starting goalkeeper Kaci Backs.
SIUE tied it up at 38:40 when Jennifer Kratzer booted the ball from 20 yards out with an assist from Brittany Bodziak. Burton said the goal was an impressive one.
"There were four or five great passes before the goal," he said. Ashley Davidson had it on the right side and passed it to Bodziak, who lifted it over UT Martin defenders to Kratzer. After two quick touches, Kratzer had the ball in the net past Skyhawks goalie Johanna Rathbun.
UT Martin grabbed the lead with less than a minute to play before halftime. Brooke Robertson scored at 44:01 off a free kick from Stephanie Nilica.
SIUE outshot UT Martin 9-6 in the second half but were outshot 16-12 overall. UT Martin won in the scoring department, adding goals from Alex Vansise at 57:14 and Jamie Furstenburg at 87:38.
"We're just looking to find consistency," said Burton.
