September 24, 2008 12-Day Layoff Ends EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer returns to action after a 12-day layoff, traveling to Cookeville, Tenn., Thursday to take on Tennessee Tech. SIUE stands with a 3-3 record for the season coming off its latest win over Southeast Missouri State 1-0. "We are coming off two of our best efforts of the season," SIUE Coach Derek Burton said. The Golden Eagles, a future Ohio Valley Conference foe, come into the contest with a 1-5 record overall off a loss to UNC-Ashville 1-0. "If we play well, we will have a chance to win games," Burton said. "I look for our team to play physical and possess the ball." The Golden Eagles have allowed a total of 35 goals so far in the season. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Thacker has 58 saves, giving up 32 goals in nine games. For the Cougars, goalkeeper Kaci Backs (Greenville) holds a 1.00 goals against average, has grabbed 16 saves, and has earned two shutouts. In backfield support of Kaci Backs in the defensive unit made up of Kelly Limpert (St. Charles, Mo), Devon Thomas (Brookfield) and Kelley Humphrey (Edwardsville). "The back four have been solid and are working very hard," Burton said. "It is important for us to be consistent on the defensive side." -siue cougars- |
