Limpert Scores in OT
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Kelly Limpert broke a scoreless tie with eight seconds left in the first overtime period as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated Tennessee Tech 1-0 Thursday.
Limpert turned a pass from teammate Chelsey Johnston into the game's only goal. SIUE improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 this season against future Ohio Valley Conference opponents. Tennessee Tech fell to 1-9.
SIUE easily could have left the game frustrated after dominating the flow of the game. SIUE outshot Tennessee Tech 26-4, including seven shots in overtime.
"We controlled the game and controlled the possession," said SIUE Coach Derek Burton.
The Cougars had been off for 12 days since its last game. The statistics certainly didn't show it. SIUE didn't allow a corner kick on defense. SIUE goalkeepers Kaci Backs and Claire Lovercheck combined for the shutout.
In setting up the game-winner, Burton said Johnston did a good job of attacking out of the backfield.
"It was a great play by Chelsey and a great play by Kelly to finish for us," said Burton.
The Cougars return to action Sunday at Missouri State, facing the Bears in a 1:30 p.m. game in Springfield, Mo.
