Warren Riley - Chicago, Ill.

Warren Riley is just like many of his fellow classmates at SIUE. He is involved in intramural sports, he likes spending time outside and when he’s not studying, he can be found hanging out with friends. One thing that makes Warren different from many of his peers is that he is a transfer student. Even after spending his entire first year of college at a different university, Warren has been able to get involved and make as many friends as someone who has been at SIUE from day one.

“Transferring to SIUE was actually a smooth, easy transition,” said Warren. “There are always so many activities going on that I was able to make friends quickly without much effort.”

Warren credits getting involved in intramural sports with keeping him busy during his first months at SIUE–he played football, basketball, volleyball and softball this year. He also joined a fraternity, Sigma Tau Gamma, and has dedicated a lot of his free time to growing and advancing the chapter.

If there are any social obstacles one must face in transferring schools, Warren has clearly found plenty of resources at SIUE to get past them. But there is more to transferring than just making friends–figuring out financial aid, registering for classes and other administrative tasks can be a burden.

If you ask Warren, though, he would tell you differently. “SIUE has an entire office dedicated to helping students interested in transferring,” said Warren. “It was actually very easy, and I didn’t have to run around talking to a hundred different people.”

Warren says that he not only appreciates the fact that everything was taken care of in one central location, but that the office staff was so flexible and understanding through the whole process.

“I transferred to be closer to home and family in Chicago, and it didn’t hurt that SIUE has one of the lowest tuition rates in the state,” said Warren. “But those are just two benefits among the countless positive experiences I’ve had at SIUE so far.”
